Islands in a Common Sea Trailer

Islands in a Common Sea is a docuseries that explores the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen around the world with a focus on how sustainable food production can restore nature and reconnect us to our food, the land, the sea, and communities.

Based on Jenny Jefferies’ acclaimed 2024 book, Islands in a Common Sea, is an uplifting docuseries that journeys across the globe to uncover the lives of farmers and fishermen at the heart of sustainable food production. Through inspiring characters, stunning landscapes, heritage and heartfelt stories, the series delves into the challenges of producing food in harmony with nature. By spotlighting communities who are rediscovering their bond with the land and sea, the series inspires viewers to reimagine their relationship with food and the planet.

Each episode sets-up the farmer or fisherman as a pioneer in their industry, building their own local supply chain, carving out a brand, meeting customers and educating the community about the value of their produce. This new revolution in food and farming is contrasted with the power of the global food corps, as the presenter frames the ethical arguments for and against “the miracle and disaster” of the industrial food system. A system that feeds the world’s growing population but at an extreme cost – to our soils, water, forests, biodiversity, and climate.

As well as an in-depth look at how the food is grown and harvested, each episode features traditional and family recipes created using local ingredients from the farm or sea. The farmer cooks and talks us through one of their favourite dishes, where each ingredient is from, how to cook it and why the dish is special for them. The provenance of the food is front and centre as the farmer and presenter sit down overlooking the farm or sea to enjoy the nutritious, tasteful and healing dish. Childhood memories, family traditions and heritage is shared as the taste and story of the food fills and nourishes their belly and soul.

Islands in a Common Sea is informative, accessible and entertaining – food, farming and fishing is now a highly topical subject and has global relevance for audiences worldwide. It weaves stories of food provenance, with inspiring characters centered right at the heart of the debate about how we feed the world without destroying the natural systems we all depend on.

We are also adapting three other stories from the book: regenerative beef agriculture in the UK, Sustainable scallop fishing in the US, herbs, spices and wellbeing in Bhutan.
